Blossoms of Power

Will two people on a journey for revenge find love at the end?

Blossoms of Power is a cdrama that follows Gu Qing Zi (Meng ZiYi) and her relationship with a sickly Crown Prince (Xiao Hua Yong) and the trials they face as they team up to take their respective revenges on his family. The drama follows Gu Qing Zi as she’s reincarnated into the Commandery Princess’s body after her family is executed. She uses this opportunity to take down her husband, whom just watched it happen. As she makes her way back to the capitol, she’s attacked by bandits and meets a mysterious warrior who swoops in to save her. As she makes her way back, she formulates a plan and sets it in motion. As the Commanderary Princess, she’s tasked to choose a prince from the royal family to marry. Because of her father’s extraordinary achievements as a general, she’s given leeway to choose her own husband. As the princes fight for her hand, she’s able to start taking them down one by one, thanks in part to help from Xiao Hua Yong, the Crown Prince. Hua Yong was poisoned at a young age and deemed too sickly to take part in court politics, so he’s not considered a threat. At least on the surface. I loved this drama so much. The chemistry between Gu Qing Zi and Hua Yong is palpable. The way he’s shamelessly in love with her at first sight, whereas she’s cold and focused on revenge is one of my favorite tropes. She’s extremely smart and capable, and that doesn’t diminish as they fall in love. If anything, their relationship makes them even more deadly and capable. The story did drag a bit and was kind of confusing at first with so many players, but once you sort out who everyone is, it’s smooth sailing. The action is great, the intrigue tight and delicious. The story is well paced and the conclusion is satisfying.
