Superman

James Gunn's Superman is much more in line with what I've been dreaming of for ages. This isn't a dreary grey world where the Man Of Steel only ever looks at the sky. There are plenty of colours here and lots of weird comic book stuff going on and the movie isn't ashamed of its heritage. But really, David Corenswet should be credited with turning me round from superhero hate to superhero love. His version of the Man Of Steel doesn't seem like an untouchable god who knows everything. Instead his character makes mistakes and gets upset about the wrong things (there's some lovely vulnerability in that) which was much easier for me to get along with than other versions of Clark Kent I've seen before. The same can also be said about Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. I never felt like she was there just to provide Superman with a love interest, she has her own personality. With these two together you're reminded just how important their relationship is.

I really appreciate Gunn letting the weirdness happen. It feels comic booky and it already feels like the world is bigger than what is shown. Metropolis itself looked pretty damn good too, bright, large scale and totally lived in like this is a place that the Man Of Steel can walk around in without feeling out of place. There was loads of CGI involved (as you’d expect), and most of the time it's alright, but a few times it did annoy me. There weren’t loads of giant fights involving punches going through buildings, but these tiny little scenes showing Superman stopping to save a squirrel told me volumes about his character too. I’m looking for someone like that, stupidly powerful but still interested in this one little life. Overall this is a fun movie and it does inspire the hope that superman stands for.
