Wednesday

Wednesday could very easily have felt like somebody took The Addams Family and pushed it through a generic teenage Netflix machine. There is a school, romances, rivalries, a mystery and loads of attractive supernatural teenagers. What saves it is Jenna Ortega.

She completely understands that Wednesday cannot spend the series winking at the audience. The character genuinely believes she is surrounded by idiots. Even when the story is doing something fairly standard, Ortega's delivery can make it funny simply because Wednesday looks offended that she has been forced to participate.

Her relationship with Enid is probably my favourite part. Putting Wednesday next to somebody bright, cheerful and desperate to be her friend should be an obvious comedy setup, but it slowly becomes one of the most genuine relationships in the show. Thing is brilliant too, which is impressive considering it is literally a hand.

Tim Burton's fingerprints are all over Nevermore. The production design, costumes and slightly gothic fairy tale look fit the Addams world really well without simply recreating the old films. The dance scene became massive for a reason: it is weird, funny and completely committed.

The mystery itself is where things become more ordinary. The love triangle never interested me much and some of the reveals are easier to spot than the show probably thinks. I would happily trade some of that teenage drama for more of the Addams family actually being together.

Still, as a new version of a character who has already had several brilliant incarnations, Wednesday works far better than it had any right to.
