Spider-Noir Creator Reveals What Season 2 Could Have Looked Like After Cancellation

Although the show may be over, Spider-Noir was axed earlier this month after just wrapping up its first season. There’s clearly potential for much more from Nicolas Cage’s noir detective if Prime Video wanted to take him back. Yet two days after the show got axed the series won five Emmy Awards for outstanding achievements, making it slightly awkward watching people talk about how cool the whole thing was while also acknowledging that they’d probably watch Season Two as well. Co-showrunner and executive producer Oren Uziel spoke about where things might’ve gone if they were going to keep producing more episodes including how it wasn’t really ever about repeating what happened in New York again. Uziel noted that he had thought about maybe putting Spider-Man’s story into another location, including Los Angeles (given its rich heritage of noir) or even Europe. In addition, because Spider-Noir started out in 1933 on the cusp of the Second World War, it would’ve been very interesting. Nicolas Cage’s Ben Reilly still has all of his powers at the conclusion of the first season, leaving open the potential for telling many different types of stories going forward. Imagine developing each season set in a completely different city, featuring an entirely new mystery and a wildly different approach to the noir genre.

In the immediate aftermath of its cancellation, Spider-Noir was awarded 11 Emmys — winning in categories such as cinematography, visual effects, title design, sound editing and stunt performance. And despite his apparent mixed feelings towards the show’s fate overall, Uziel does seem quite content that at least the first season tells a complete story. One possible positive from all this? Well, at least we’re not left with some giant cliffhanger hanging over us with no resolution. Spider-Noir was built along similar lines to many classic noir stories. You start off with a case, then wrap it up once it’s solved. I don’t know yet if that really does come to an end, though. It’ll be interesting to see how much work goes into reviving this show somewhere else.
