The Dog Stars isn't like modern movies with glamour or excitement trying to make the apocalypse look cool. It's dramatic and emotional. This is a movie with a lot of heart that manages to build a world in less than two hours while giving you characters you actually care about.

The story follows a world where most of humanity has been wiped out by a flu like virus, which makes the whole thing hit a little given what we've all experienced in recent years. I imagine its been made so that the film doesn't feel the need to explain every detail. Instead it leaves gaps for you to fill in meaning part of the world building actually happens in your head. Like this is what the worst case scenario of covid could have been.

It's not a fast paced movie but It never felt slow to me. It moves at the speed it needs to. Relationships develop naturally, we see connections that already exist and new ones forming. Despite any humans being left there's an incredible amount of humanity in this film. Both the good and the bad.

I'm honestly not even sure what genre I'd put this in. It's part drama, part thriller, part action and part romance with a bit of bromance thrown in for good measure. Underneath all of that it's really a film about fear, love and hope.

Somehow this film made me feel much every emotion possible. That's something I think a lot of movies have forgotten how to do. It's not about keeping you entertained for two hours. It makes you feel something. It makes you think.

The characters all worked perfectly. Every actor delivered. I genuinely wouldn't change a thing. It wasn't too long it wasn't too short and I never felt like there was a scene that didn't belong. Every moment seemed to add something to the world, the characters or the story.

The Dog Stars is fantastic. 10/10.

It's the kind of film that reminds you why you love movies in the place.

Positives

The movie has a heart of its own. It doesn't drag and constantly has you going through different emotions.

Negatives

There was a trailer for the new Oasis documentary that was played before the movie
