Pinocchio Unstrung

Pinocchio Unstrung is the newest entry to the Twisted Childhood Universe (TCU) following on from two Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey movies, Peter Pans Neverland Nightmare and Bambi the Reckoning. The TCU began in 2023 and has been creating a dark reimagining of our childhood characters that have been released into the public domain. Now before I get started, these aren’t the kind of movies that you can expect to see winning awards or being considered cinematic masterpieces. These movies are just fun, gritty adaptations of our beloved childhood characters as creepy horror movie villains. Does it work? In a way, yes. If you’re alone and just want a movie to sit and enjoy I can’t imagine this being a great experience. These movies should be enjoyed with a group of friends who can have a laugh at the absurd notion of the wooden puppet you remember and love slashing his way through numerous amounts of high schoolers. Don’t expect jump scares or deep lore to follow, what this does deliver is ridiculous death scenes, obscure gore, and things so crazy that you and your friends will be laughing away throughout the movie. Pinocchio Unstrung has a reasonably good plot, not actually that farfetched for a movie about a talking puppet. The characters are easy to be invested in. carnage is plentiful, and the ridiculousness is on another level. My one disappointment with this movie is Robert Englund is cast in this with top billing, and he is completely underused. I would love to have seen more of his Jiminy Cricket. For the genre of this movie its at the top of its game. It knows what it is, and how it needs to be perceived and it executes it to perfection. Definitely worth having some friends over to enjoy a movie night and having on while you can talk throughout and still know what is going on and you will be satisfied by the end. Pinocchio Unstrung comes to DVD on 7th September 2026 and is available to preorder from the link below
